Terminating an employee can be a scary thing. There’s no telling how they’ll react when they get the news. Will they throw things around your office? Will they cry, or yell? Or will they just try to storm out – possibly even in an attempt at taking your company’s hard-earned secrets with them?
Unfortunately, terminating our staff is just a part of running a business. People change, businesses change, and the world keeps turning. It’s everyone’s least favorite part of being the boss, but it is exactly that: a part of being the boss.

Our clients ask us a lot: “What can we do to help prevent our staff from earning us a spot on CNN’s ‘Most Hacked List’?” The answer is simple: make sure that when you let an employee go, they’re held accountable. Ensure that their access to your buildings and systems is disabled before they walk out the door. Coordinate with your IT department, your management, and your HR department, and be thorough.
With that in mind, our vCIOs sat down to draft a “Terminated Employee Checklist”. You can use this checklist to guide you through the rough waters that are employee separations. You’ll want to chat with your IT, HR, and management teams before using the steps we’ve provided, to ensure that you cover everything your specific business needs – or, you can give us a call, and we’ll be happy to customize it for you!
